Hixson Utility customers who irrigate their lawns, wash vehicles, or frequently fill pools may want to consider adding a dedicated irrigation meter. Residents or businesses that are served by either Chattanooga Sewer or Hamilton County WWTA are billed sewer charges for a percentage of water consumed on the domestic water account. Separate irrigation meters are billed for water consumption only. Especially in summer months, this can lead to less expensive sewer bills.
When considering this option, please be aware that residential Chattanooga Sewer customers without an irrigation meter currently receive a built-in 10% discount on sewer fees to cover expected outdoor usage. The 10% discount on the domestic account is removed when an irrigation meter is installed. Hamilton County WWTA customers currently do not receive a discount on their sewer usage, nor do commercial Chattanooga Sewer customers.
If you think an irrigation meter could be a good choice for you, please be aware that there is typically a waiting period of several weeks before your meter will be installed, as work is completed in the order received. Poor weather conditions can also cause delays. Not all properties will have sufficient infrastructure necessary for an irrigation meter installation; interested customers should call our office to verify availability. Property owners will be responsible for all necessary plumbing to connect the new meter to existing or new spigots and/or faucets, as well as any fees associated with street cut permitting and repair. Annual backflow testing is required on irrigation meters; more information is available on our Backflow page.
For current pricing on new meter installations, please see our Fees page. Typical customers will find a 5/8" meter sufficient.
